Ask each firm what business number the app is supposed to move. A partner who answers with retention, support deflection or conversion is thinking about your product. A partner who answers with a feature list is thinking about a quote.
Ask to meet the actual team
The people in the pitch are often not the people who build. Ask for the names, the timezone, and how many other projects each person is on.
Read the code, not just the portfolio
Request a code sample or a walkthrough of a repo they own. Tests, CI, and a clean release pipeline tell you more than screenshots.
Check how they handle change
Every roadmap changes by month two. Ask how scope changes are priced, and what happens when a discovery invalidates a milestone.
